Single-speed reduction gearbox

The fixed-ratio gearset between the motor and the driveshafts. An EV has no multi-speed gearbox.

How you know it is this

  • A whine that changes with road speed
  • A clunk on changing between drive and reverse
  • Oil leaking from the drive unit
  • A grinding under load

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Far simpler than an automatic gearbox and much more reliable — there are no clutches, no valve body and no torque converter.
  • It has oil, and that oil does have a service life even though many owners assume an EV has nothing to service.
  • Usually integral with the motor housing, so a gearbox fault often means the drive unit.
  • A whine that has always been there is normal on an EV. A whine that has appeared is not.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
