Electric drive motor — rear

The rear drive motor — the main motor on most EQ models.

How you know it is this

  • Loss of drive or severely reduced power
  • A whine or grinding that rises with road speed
  • A drive system fault
  • Coolant loss from the drive unit

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Usually supplied as a complete drive unit with the reduction gear and often the inverter.
  • Rule out the inverter and the resolver first. Both present as motor faults and both are cheaper.
  • Heavy, and high voltage throughout. Not a general workshop job.
  • Used drive units exist, but their history is unknown and the labour to fit one is the same as for a new one.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
