Fittings are bought by the ceiling they go into and the room they serve. Three questions settle almost every order: what ceiling, what room, and what colour.

Match the fitting to the ceiling

  • Grid (suspended) ceiling — a 60 × 60 panel. The LEDVANCE panels here are 595 × 595 mm so they drop into a standard 600 mm tile grid. 60 × 120 and 30 × 120 panels fit the long-tile grids.
  • Gypsum or plaster ceiling — a recessed downlight. They are sized by the cut-out, in 4, 6 and 8 inch; measure the existing hole before ordering a replacement.
  • No false ceiling, or a slab — a surface ceiling light or a batten fixed straight to it.
  • Car park, kitchen, plant room or anywhere wet or dusty — an IP65 damp-proof batten. Some take T8 LED tubes, some are integrated; the row says which.
  • Outside walls and covered walkways — an IP65 bulkhead.

Brightness and colour

Compare fittings by lumens, not watts. The backlit 60 × 60 panel in this range gives 3,680 lumens from 38 W, which is the figure to compare against any other panel quoted to you.

What size LED panel fits a 600 × 600 ceiling grid?

A 595 × 595 mm panel, which is what the LEDVANCE 60 × 60 panels in this range measure. The 5 mm allowance is what lets it drop into the grid.

Which light fitting should I use in a car park or kitchen?

An IP65 damp-proof batten. IP65 means sealed against dust and water jets, which is what a car park, commercial kitchen or plant room needs. Ordinary panels and downlights are indoor-dry fittings.

What size downlight do I need?

Measure the cut-out in the ceiling. Downlights are sold as 4, 6 and 8 inch, and a replacement has to fill the existing hole. The size is printed on every downlight row.

4000K or 6500K for an office?

4000K cool white is the usual office choice — white without being clinical. 6500K day light suits warehouses, workshops and car parks.
