Specifying IT & security systems for a new site

CCTV, access control, attendance, cabling, cabinets and networking usually get bought as six separate line items from six different suppliers, none of them talking to each other. Here is what actually decides each one, and why doing it as one job changes the outcome.

Specifying IT & security systems for a new site

CCTV, access control, attendance, cabling, cabinets and networking usually get bought as six separate line items from six different suppliers, none of them talking to each other. Here is what actually decides each one, and why doing it as one job changes the outcome.

CCTV: coverage and storage, not just camera count

A camera count on its own tells you nothing about whether a site is actually covered, or whether the footage will still exist when someone asks for it three weeks later.

Camera typeBest for
DomeDiscreet, indoor or covered areas — harder to tell which way it's pointing
BulletVisible outdoor deterrent — the housing itself is the warning
PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom)A wide area monitored actively from one point, at higher cost per camera
  • Retention period drives storage, not the other way round — decide how many days of footage you actually need before sizing the recorder, not after.
  • SIRA (Dubai's Security Industry Regulatory Agency) sets real installation and equipment standards for commercial CCTV in the emirate — a genuine, checkable requirement on a compliant site, not a marketing phrase.
  • Hikvision and Dahua are the two brands most UAE sites already run — matching an existing system to the same brand avoids a second, incompatible NVR.

Access control and biometric attendance are two different jobs

A fingerprint or facial terminal at a door and one at a time clock can look identical, and buyers regularly assume one does both. It usually doesn't.

Access controlBiometric attendance
JobDecides whether the door unlocksLogs when someone arrived and left
OutputAn unlocked doorA report a payroll team can use
Where it sitsAt the door itselfAt the entrance or floor, not necessarily on a door

Some hardware genuinely does both jobs from one terminal — tell us if you need that, rather than assuming every reader on the price list does.

Facial vs fingerprint vs card, the real trade-off

Facial recognition is fastest and fully contactless, at the highest unit cost. Fingerprint is the established, reliable standard at a lower cost, but requires contact. Card/fob is cheapest per user and easiest to issue and revoke for a large or changing workforce, but the card itself can be lost, shared or cloned. Pick by what the site actually needs — throughput, hygiene, or headcount turnover — not by which sounds most modern.

Cabling and cabinets — the part nobody sees until it fails

Every camera, reader and desk in the building plugs into cabling that disappears behind a wall once the job is done. Getting it wrong is invisible right up until it isn't.

  • Cat6 covers standard gigabit runs at typical office distances — it is not the wrong choice for most desks.
  • Cat6A is for 10-gigabit speeds, not for longer runs — both grades share the same 100 m channel limit, 90 m in the wall plus the patch leads at each end. What Cat6A buys is 10-gigabit over that full 100 m, where Cat6 carries gigabit the whole way but 10-gigabit only to about 37–55 m. It is the right call for a server room or a backbone meant to last past the next fit-out, not every point in the building. Any run longer than 100 m needs fibre or a switch in between, whichever grade you buy.
  • Fibre is for between buildings or floors, a different job priced separately from desk cabling.
  • A cabinet with unmanaged cabling inside it is the single most common reason a comms room becomes unserviceable within a year — cable management and airflow are part of the fit-out, not an add-on.

Why "A-to-Z" is the point, not a slogan

The most common failure mode on a new site isn't bad equipment — it's cabling from one contractor, switches from another and Wi-Fi from a third, none of them configured to work together, with no single party responsible when something doesn't.

A new vertical for this business, said plainly

This category is a new launch. What's on this page is real, researched product and technology information — it is not a claim of installations already completed or of certifications already held. Ask directly about track record and approvals on a specific job, and expect a straight answer either way.

Questions

Straight answers.

Do I need SIRA-compliant CCTV?

If your site is in Dubai and the installation falls under SIRA's scope, yes — the Security Industry Regulatory Agency sets real installation and equipment standards, and it's a checkable requirement rather than a formality. Tell us your site and we'll confirm what applies before quoting.

What's the difference between access control and a time attendance system?

Access control decides whether a door unlocks. Time attendance logs when someone arrived and left, feeding a report for payroll. They can look identical at the terminal, but they do different jobs — some hardware does both, most doesn't, so say which one you need.

Should I choose facial recognition, fingerprint or card access?

Facial is fastest and fully contactless at the highest cost. Fingerprint is the reliable, lower-cost standard, but needs contact. Card/fob is cheapest per user and easiest to issue or revoke for a large or changing workforce, at the cost of a card that can be lost or shared. Pick by what the site actually needs.

What's the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A cabling?

Cat6 covers standard gigabit speeds at typical office distances — fine for most desks. Cat6A is for 10-gigabit speeds and not for longer runs: both grades share the same 100 m channel limit, 90 m in the wall plus the patch leads at each end. What Cat6A buys is 10-gigabit over that full 100 m, where Cat6 carries gigabit the whole way but 10-gigabit only to about 37–55 m. It is the right choice for a server room or a backbone meant to last through the next fit-out, not every point in the building. Any run longer than 100 m needs fibre or a switch in between, whichever grade you buy.

Why buy CCTV, cabling and networking as one job instead of separate contractors?

Because the common failure is exactly that split: cabling from one contractor, switches from another, Wi-Fi from a third, none configured to work together, and no one responsible when something doesn't. One scope and one quotation means one point of responsibility for the whole system.

Is Lion Yard SIRA-approved or an authorised dealer for these brands?

This is a new category for the business — ask directly about track record and specific approvals on your job, and we'll tell you plainly what applies and what doesn't rather than implying a history that isn't there yet.
