Worth knowing. Red on a bolt you will need to undo is the expensive mistake in this category — it usually means heat, and sometimes it means drilling. If in doubt, blue.

- Anaerobic locking compounds in medium and high strength, and nickel anti-seize compound for hot or dissimilar-metal threads.
- Who buys it
- Workshops, plant maintenance, generator and pump servicing, and anyone reassembling a fastener that has to stay put — or has to come apart again next service.
- Made of
- Anaerobic methacrylate for the threadlockers; a nickel-and-graphite solid lubricant in a petroleum carrier for the anti-seize.
- How it works
- An anaerobic threadlocker cures in the ABSENCE of air, once the joint is closed, which is why it stays liquid in the bottle and sets in the thread. Anti-seize does not cure at all — it leaves a solid-lubricant film between the threads so they cannot cold-weld together.
- Blue or red
- Blue is medium strength, rated for fasteners 1/4 to 3/4 inch (6 to 20 mm), locks against vibration and still comes apart with hand tools. Red is high strength, for heavy-duty fasteners 3/8 to 1 inch (10 to 25 mm), studs and press fits, and is effectively permanent — removal means heat.
- Where it is the wrong choice
- Red threadlocker on a fastener you will need to remove again is the commonest mistake in this range, and the fix is a torch. With anti-seize, follow the figure in the equipment manufacturer's manual rather than a rule of thumb. Permatex's own data sheet for this nickel anti-seize says to reassemble using normal torque values, while many fastener standards publish a reduced figure for a lubricated thread — the two disagree, so the equipment manual decides.
