Worth knowing. Brake cleaner is a strong solvent meant for metal. On painted panels, rubber hoses or plastic trim it can lift the finish or craze the plastic.

Solvent and water-based cleaners for components, glass, electrical contacts and battery terminals, in aerosols, trigger bottles, gallons and concentrates.

Workshops and plant maintenance, generator and switchgear servicing, facilities contractors, and car wash and valeting operations buying the gallon and concentrate sizes.
Made of
Either a volatile solvent blend that flashes off dry, or a water-based alkaline detergent that has to be rinsed. Which one it is changes how it is used.
How it works
A solvent parts cleaner dissolves oil and grease and evaporates, leaving no residue — which is why it is the one for brakes and contacts. A water-based degreaser lifts soil so it can be rinsed or wiped away, and works better hot and dwelled. Earth Soap is a concentrate, diluted as far as 1:50 for routine work, and will go through a pressure washer or a parts washer.
Where it is the wrong choice
Solvent cleaners attack paint, rubber and many plastics, so keep brake cleaner off a painted wing and off rubber boots. Contact cleaner is formulated for electrical connectors and switchgear and a general degreaser is not — they are not interchangeable in either direction. It is a flammable aerosol, so isolate and de-energise the equipment and let the solvent flash off completely before power is restored; nothing on this shelf is rated for use on live gear. And a cleaner that leaves a residue has no business on a brake friction face or on a surface about to be sealed.
