25 mm Film-Faced (Shuttering) Plywood

1220 × 2440 mm sheet · 2.98 m² · 336 sheets per 1,000 m². Heavy formwork and deck panels. A bare sanded face is not a film face, whatever the board is called — check the face before it goes into a form. Phenolic film-faced plywood for concrete formwork — the board that gets struck, cleaned and set again. The film face is what releases the pour and what the reuse is bought for.

Specification

Marine, film-faced or commercial?
Three different boards sold under one word, and the adhesive is what really separates them. MARINE is bonded with WBP phenolic right through and laid up without voids, for anything that gets wet or stays humid. FILM-FACED (shuttering) — this page — is a WBP-bonded board with a phenolic film on both faces, bought to strike concrete and be used again. COMMERCIAL is an MR-bonded interior board for carpentry and fit-out, and will delaminate if it gets wet. If the work is concrete, film-faced; if it gets wet, marine; if it is dry interior work, commercial.
What makes it shuttering grade
A phenolic film bonded to both faces of a WBP-bonded hardwood or poplar core. The core is waterproof-glued in its own right; the film is what makes the face slick, so wet concrete releases instead of binding to the wood and the sheet comes off flat enough to pour against again.
The film
Usually dark brown or black, and smooth to the touch. A bare sanded wood face is not a film face, whatever the board is called — check the face before it goes into a form.
Standard size
1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft) sheets · 2.98 m² each · 336 sheets to 1,000 m².
Thicknesses
4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 25 mm. 18 mm is the standard formwork board and the one most contractors mean.
Reuse
A properly stripped and cleaned sheet is good for multiple pours before the film wears through. How many depends on the pour, the release agent and how the sheet is handled, so it is not a number we publish.
Cut edges
Every cut and drilled hole opens the core through the film. Sealing them is what decides whether a sheet gives you its second pour.
What it is not for
Not a furniture or decorative board. The film is made to release, which is exactly why paint, glue and laminate will not hold on it. For anything that has to be finished, use commercial plywood; for anything that stays wet, marine.
