Specification
- Marine, film-faced or commercial?
- Three different boards sold under one word, and the adhesive is what really separates them. MARINE is bonded with WBP phenolic right through and laid up without voids, for anything that gets wet or stays humid. FILM-FACED (shuttering) is a WBP-bonded board with a phenolic film on both faces, bought to strike concrete and be used again. COMMERCIAL — this page — is an MR-bonded interior board for carpentry and fit-out, and will delaminate if it gets wet. If the work is concrete, film-faced; if it gets wet, marine; if it is dry interior work, commercial.
- Also sold as MR plywood
- Commercial and MR are the same grade. MR is moisture RESISTANT, not waterproof: the plies are bonded with a urea-formaldehyde resin rather than the WBP phenolic used in marine and film-faced board. It copes with humidity and the occasional splash; it does not cope with standing water.
- What it is for
- Cost-effective interior work — wardrobes and modular units, office fit-out, partitions, panelling, false ceilings and shelving — plus packing crates, site boxing and protection board.

- 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft) sheets · 2.98 m² each · 336 sheets to 1,000 m².
- Thicknesses
- 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 25 mm. 12 mm is the common general-purpose board; 18 mm and up for anything carrying weight.
- Surface and finishing
- Sanded face veneer both sides, ready to take laminate, veneer or paint directly.
- What it is not
- Not a formwork board and not a wet-service board. Left in contact with pooling water, or out in the rain, it will delaminate and warp — and it does that quickly. Where the work is concrete use film-faced; where it gets wet use marine.
- Telling it apart on site
- A pale softwood or lower-grade face with the knots plainly showing through, and a coarser core at the cut edge. Minor core gaps are allowed in this grade and are not a defect.
