Worth knowing. A CFL takes a few seconds to reach full brightness and does not like being switched on and off constantly. Where a light is used in short bursts — a store cupboard, a bathroom — LED is the better replacement.

- What it is
- A fluorescent tube folded into a spiral or a stick so it fits an ordinary lamp holder, with the control gear built into the base. It goes straight in - no rewiring, no separate driver.
- Who buys it
- Labour accommodation and staff housing with hundreds of identical fittings running eight to twelve hours a day, facilities teams holding maintenance stock, and warehouses with legacy pendant fittings.
- Made of
- A sealed glass tube coated inside with phosphor powder, filled with argon and a small dose of mercury vapour. The base holds an electronic ballast on a circuit board in a moulded polymer housing.
- How it works
- The ballast strikes a discharge through the mercury vapour, which emits ultraviolet. The phosphor coating absorbs that UV and re-emits it as visible light. The phosphor blend sets the colour, and it is why the lamp takes two to three minutes to reach full brightness from cold.
- What it gives you
- Roughly 80% less electricity than the filament lamp it replaces, and eight to ten times the life - which matters more than the electricity when the fitting is at the top of a stairwell.
- Where it is the wrong choice
- Never on a dimmer; it will flicker or fail. Never where it is switched frequently, because short cycling shortens CFL life sharply - a store cupboard or a toilet wants LED. Never where instant full light matters, such as a stairwell on a PIR sensor.
- It contains mercury
- A broken lamp needs the room ventilated and the pieces cleared carefully rather than vacuumed. Spent lamps go to a licensed waste handler, not into general waste.
