- Wheel cleaner and tyre dressing do opposite jobs — one strips, one coats. Wheel cleaner — Strips brake dust and road film off the rim. Acid-free types are the safe default for alloys. Brake dust repellent — Applied to a clean wheel so the next week's dust does not bond to it. Tyre gel — Wiped on with an applicator. The most control and the longest lasting finish. Tyre foam or aerosol — Sprayed on and left. Quickest, and the usual choice at volume. Tyre cleaner — Strips the brown bloom off a neglected sidewall before any dressing will hold.
